Classic Winner:
Mike Porter’s 07 Johnny Red

Mike Porter came to Stephenville, Texas back in 2004 and bought a young bull at Jerry Nelson’s sale. Porter, who hails from Lyman, S.C., brought his young bull home and turned him over to Ernie Treadway, a veteran rodeo producer to see how his new bull would turn out. Two years later, Porter brought that bull back to Texas and won his first event.

07 Johnny Red outscored the second place bull by just one point in a class filled with 48 top Classic bulls. Of the victory, Porter said, “He bucks hard and he does it every time. Ernie Treadway trained him and I couldn’t have done it without his knowledge. I need to thank my wife Kathy for all the hard work and support.” Johnny Red is a son of Muddy Waters and a grandson of White Water Skoal, and out of a Jerry Nelson cow. “We bucked him in some futurities,” explained Porter, “but he didn’t work well with a dummy. Treadway saw something in him, and worked with him, and today he really performed great.”

Johnny Red displayed power, came out of the chute and immediately threw the rider over his head. His power must have impressed the judges because they scored him 88.5 points along with $2,375. Treadway knew he had something, because when asked what he was doing out West he remarked, “I have the bull that will win this event.” It’s one thing to say something, it’s another to back it up.

Bar S Cattle Co’s 310 Dirty Rotten Scoundrel placed second with 87.5 points and $1,357. The Jaynes Gang/Fred Robinson’s M943 Cowboy Trash came in Third with 87 points and $1,018. 233 Eddie Munster, owned by Roy Carter, finished Fourth with 86.75 points and $848. Tommy Whitehead/Jeff Tilley’s 358 Little Slim scored 86.5 and $721 to finish fifth.

Robbie Herrington’s HC 33 placed sixth with 86 points and $593. 01 Clift’s Edge owned by D&H Cattle Co. and Whitehead/ Tilly’s W7 Snappin’ Cat finished seventh/eighth with 85.75 points and $467 each. Ninth place went to 13 Mr. Incredible, owned by Rob Parker/WFO with 85.5 points and $339. 10th place was 586 Air Choctaw owned by Oka Luca Rodeo Stock with 85.25 points and $297.

3.25 points separated first from 10th, showing just how close the bulls were. It really takes a solid bull to win one of these ABBI Classics. How much harder will it be next season to win? Frontier Rodeo and Jerry Nelson’s team is trained to put on these events and they keep things running smoothly. Nelson, with his wife, Beverly, are providing many Classic events and furnishing those who love the Classics a place to show off their bulls.
